Marvel Crisis Protocol Worlds Teams Championship
Introduction
Hi, my name is Torbjörn Hansson and I was on the winning team of this years WTC. WTC stands for Worlds Teams Championship, and this was the fist ever iteration for Marvel Crisis Protocol and the 11:th one for Warmachine and Hordes. I have played in 3 of them for Team Sweden in WmH, but now I'm playing Marvel Crisis Protocol for team Sweden, Good with Hammers, which is my local meta.
Black Order De-tour
I used to play legion in mk2 of WmH, and I was good at it. It's a very specific playstyle of using long threat ranges to then force the opponent into taking a passive position on scenarion, so that you can score out and win without the opponent ever getting to play. In MCP the closest affiliation to playing this way was Black Order. So I put a hell of a lot of practice into playing those and I knew exactly what to do in every game to a decent success rate. A saying from the WmH days was, "Are you not bored of your faction at the WTC then you haven't practiced enough" and well I was pretty tired of playing Black Order so when the changes happened a month ago and my way of playing Black Order was totally and completely killed off, I was decently relieved. Some people argued with me that this was a buff to Black Order, I do not agree. It can see how this might be a buff to rosters that contain black order because Black Order is now easily splashed and your opponent has to consider Black Order, but if you were playing mono Black Order it totally killed the ability for Thanos to spend his power. The fact is that with husband and wife Thanos can only do one Deaths decree so he can sped 4 power a turn and he gets 3 for free. People are also arguing that now he can use his spender more, and well 8 dice vs 6 dice with a wild for a throw is half a damage in average difference. So that's not a huge upgrade. Finally one of the deterrents for trying to kill Thanos is gone. Before if you tried to kill Thanos, he just portaled your whole team and ran away, so you just fed him power and more or less staggered your whole team. Now if you try and kill Thanos he can't do anything with that extra power. In my practice games after the update I couldn't spend my power with Thanos and it felt super under powered, but at the same time Black Order did go 10-2 at the WTC so my read might be skewed and I might be too stuck in how I used to play vs how they're supposed to play right now.
List
So after the update my whole roster was gone, and Anders on my teams Malekith roster was also destroyed. So he switched to his old comfort of Brotherhood. Which meant we had Brotherhood, Shield, Guardians, and X-men in our roster. 3 killy lists and one scenario list. Which meant I wanted something more scenario based. I think x-men, avengers and webs are the best scenario factions in the game right now. My way of playing avengers wasn't really a choice since Iron man is in shield and beast in xmen. So I had to go with Webs.
What I realized with webs is that they do not want to play researcher. At the same time their core is so damn good, they don't really need splash characters to cover problematic matchups. So I could dedicate 4 slots to a different faction just to solve researcher.
Which lead me to:
Characters (10)
* Amazing Spider-Man (5)
Black Cat (3)
Ghost Spider (3)
Moon Knight (3)
* Spider-Man (Miles Morales) (3)
* Black Panther (4)
Iron Fist (3)
* Blade (4)
The Immortal Hulk (7)
Wong (2)
Team Tactics (10)
Siege of Darkness
One Below All
Spider-Tracker
All Webbed Up
Fall Back
Mission Objective
Brace for Impact (R)
Patch Up (R)
Heroes for Hire
No Matter the Cost
Secure Crisis
Infinity Formula Goes Missing! (B, 17)
Riots Spark Over Extremis 3.0 (D, 17)
Cosmic Invasion! Black Order Descends on Earth (D, 16)
Extract Crisis
Spider-Infected Invade Manhattan (F, 17)
Paranoia Pummels Populace! (K, 16)
Fear Grips World As “Worthy“ Terrorize Cities (D, 18)
ASM is busted now, I personally was very excited for new core box spectacular spiderman but I don't see him ever competing with new ASM for a roster spot ever. Then Miles and Gwen are the core 3's. Black Cat is good against the big boys, like Ghostrider and hulks. Moon knight is tech when you want something that hits decently hard, but he is currently the lose spot and if I was playing this not at the WTC he would get the kick for Toad. Black Panther is key tech against Logan. X-men with priority is one of the rougher matchups for webs since then they have to play pay to flips and our extracts are still good for them. Iron Fist is a budget Black Panther, when you're playing 16 instead of 17, and the two power is key on pay to flips. He can also do semi safe extract grab under blade since he can bump backwards. Then Blade is the worthless weight you have to pick to get Immortal Hulk with bump. Wong is the superstar that keeps everything together, and I have to give credit to Huggybear and Anders for suggesting that one. The roster originally had Spiderwoman in it but I could never ever play her because she's just worse than Black Panther under Miles.
For webs I think you should always pick, all webbed up, brace and fall back. Then spider tracker in like 99% of matchups. That 1% is against teams with a lot of places, like Thanos+Cosmic Ghost Rider Guardians. The fourth card is lose and you can pick whatever.
For Blade Siege, One Below all, and fall back are always there. Brace is very common here. It's incredibly rare that people don't have a way to throw Immortal Hulk into your own stuff. It's usually a spender and then you can just say no once which is really powerful. If you think someone can kill Hulk then you should bring patchup so you can do the whole I'm immortal play. For people that don't know, you let Hulk get dazed with 10 power then he activates first, goes and stands next to a friend that patches him for 4 and then at the end of the turn he heals one more and loses the immortal token. This means he is fully healthy again and the opponent has to daze him all over again.
Mission objective is a protection card against Deadly Legacy Virus. People talk about how this is tech against Rhino a lot but I have never really seen that work in reality since you rarely can hold more than one extract and you rarely have 2 power when Rhino does his thing.
Heroes for Hire is a protection card for Hulk, it can keep him safe from stagger attacks and activated attacks.
No matter the cost is a way to get enough power on black cat to do a stagger attack turn 1 to stop the threat of the heaviest damage dealers.
Cards to consider, Bats, Aunt May's, Smash and versatile strategy. None of them made the cut but all of them I can see a case for. Bats is good since you just need to guarantee the throw with Hulk at times. Aunt May's is tech in the mirror to remove the impact of all webbed up. Smash lets Hulk be more killy. Versatile strategy you can switch from miles into ASM's leader ship to do that one final push turn to win. Especially if you use all webbed up that turn you can pay 1 to turn on 2 extra dice on anyone, which is really strong.
For scenarios I think Riots Spark, Black Order Descends and Spider-Infected, Paranoia Pummels are pretty self explanatory. I want spread out fights since both my teams are super fast and I want a lot of high scoring points on the table since I don't want to fight long fights.
Tactics as a Team
So as you can see with my roster it leaves a bit gaping hole in the fact that I can't really play against guardians. Playing Blade against a bunch of energy attackers just doesn't go well and I'm not playing pay to flips so webs struggle with keeping their points safe enough against Guardians. On the other hand I felt confident against everything else. I had two good team set ups that could handle all the crisis setups people could throw at me.
The way the WTC works you can always just dodge one difficult matchup. So I got carried by my team there. Our strategy for the weekend became to throw me out, opponents put up their guardians player and one other player. I snap picked the other player and then our team double jumped on the guardians player with guardians and something else.
Infinity Formula vs Scoundrels is something I sat and debated a lot, in a normal tournament I would probably go scoundrels since I can't dodge Guardians and Guardians just turn that extra power into damage at a better pace than I turn it into defensive benefits but against other teams I really liked the strategic benefit of just being able to pounce on the side with more extracts and creating a fight where my opponent needs to have two models sitting on the other side not contributing to stay even on points.
When I first play tested the roster I had cubes, but that lead to some highly volatile games where I was taking damage at way too fast of a rate. Some games I could close out and some I couldn't. That kind of unreliability is not allowed at the WTC. So I had to look at some of the lesser options. Senators isn't really liked by my teams, spiders want to run and Immortal Hulk rosters struggle to go wide enough to pick up 3 things without putting Wong and Blade in danger. I don't want the 3 pointers because there's not enough points so they lead to long fights. So then the option were Hammers or Skrulls and I went with hammers because my rosters prefer 18 over 20.
Match 1 vs Irish Craic Muzyka
In match 1 we got Irish Craic Muzyka. We put me out and I got Guardians and Cabal put on me, so I snapped picked the Cabal player. He was playing:
We did the roll off he won priority picked his extracts got Research Station, I got Black Order Descends. I pick 16 and feel a bit bad when my opponent says he's happy to face webs on researcher. The whole reason I got my splash is to avoid playing webs on Researcher.
So I pick Blade, Immortal Hulk, Wong and think a bit about his roster. He doesn't have any big threats, and there's nothing to steal so black cat is out, he doesn't have some super threat so no need for Gwen. I don't really need the two power from iron fist but there's really no better model to stand on a point against his list.
My opponent picked Red Skull 1, Ant Man, Wasp, Bullseye and Killmonger.
He starts with Red Skull, gets power and RnD it to the other characters and then stands on the back point.
I go and put Iron Fist on the back of the right point.
My opponent puts Ant-man on the other side point.
Wong gives an extra power to Immortal Hulk and stands on the back point. This means that Hulk can jump and bump, so he stand on the middle without spending any actions. That threat makes my opponent very scared to put anything on the researcher.
Wasp goes and tries to put some damage into an Iron Fist in cover, a bit of a wasted action and she should just have double ran onto the point with Iron Fist.
Then Blade goes and stands on the researcher. This move either forces my opponent to walk models up for Hulk to kill, which probably loses the game or loses researcher turn one. which probably also loses the game.
Bullseye walks to the back point and plinks Blade for 1.
Hulk just dubble walks to the Researcher and is happy there.
Then as the final activation Killmonger walks and charges into Blade, dealing 2 more damage to him. His only real way out of this situation was a lucky spike at Blade there to tie the researcher.
So turn 1 ends with me in control of the researcher and two of the points for 4-2. I move the researcher back a bit so Killmonger isn't on it and I can some time down the line let Wong hold both the back point and the researcher.
Turn 2 starts with Blade putting Killmonger in the dirt with an normal katana strike and then a spender with rerolls since he's bleeding. The spender also lets me back out of 4 from Bullseye but I stay within 2 of Killmonger so I heal one and gain one power from ending my activation close to someone with bleeding.
Then my opponent starts operation kill Wong and double runs Wasp down next to him.
Iron Fist feels a bit alone on his point but he's fine there. Paying 3 points for a scenario point every turn is on the expensive but acceptable range. Especially since he can come in with a super attack in the late game.
Then Ant-man turns small, jumps forward, and uppercuts Wong but deals no damage with a 6 dice attack, which only is an 18.5 % chance. Great hearo Wong!
Wong heals Blade and laughs at these silly attempts to kill him.
Then Bullseye goes up and hits and run so he's over on the left point.
Hulk bumps back, hits Wasp, gets the trigger and tosses her off, then he hits Ant man, who goes small and forces me to toss him forward and not into wasp.
Finally Red Skull walks forward a tiny smidge and then puts a Cosmic Blast into blade to deal 3 damage into Blade.
Round 2 ends and I score 4-2 again for a 8-4 score, then I move the researcher further back.
So then turn 3 starts with Blade putting Killmonger into the dirt again and runs even further back with his medium move but he stays on the researcher, thinking I might want Hulk to go fight on the other side of the table.
Antman jumps onto the car, swings at Wong, deals 3 damage, and then turns large so he can spray all three. Sadly he dazes Wong and leaves Blade on 1 but does no damage against Hulk.
Since he dazed one of my characters before activating I could do the same without losing priority. My opponent did some cute tech here when I hit Antman he turned small, so when I got the throw trigger to toss him into wasp he was only a size 1. So she was left on 2 hit points.
Bullseye walked up, tossed a knife into Blade and dazed him and with the help of hit and run he went onto the researcher
Iron Fist was kind of stuck, because if he ran to researcher then Red Skull would go there as well so he stayed on his point, while Red Skull ran down to the left point since he wasn't needed on the researcher and this was better for scoring.
So round 3 ends with me on 2 points and him owning the researcher and one point for a 2-3 and a total of 10-7 and my opponent moved the researcher towards Red Skull.
Blade decided that he wanted to hurt Bullseye who promptly ran away with parting shot. Leaving Blade with nothing really to do so he just hung around a bit.
Antman hadn't learned anything from Hulks warning so he jumped up and sprayed three models twice. Killing Wong, putting serious damage into Blade and angering Hulk. So Hulk killed Antman.
My opponent walked Red Skull up on the researcher and used his spender to throw hulk off the point.
Iron fist ran down to my home point.
Finally Bullseye hides behind the house and shakes bleed so he doesn't die.
Leading to a 1-3 scenario situation since Red Skull was healthy and Blade wasn't and the researcher moved up towards bullseye and the score is 9-7
Blade starts Turn 5 with killing Redskull and stand there hiding behind the house before I remember that maybe I should take a photo.
Finally Bullseye kills Blade and his reign of terror is over.
Then Hulk goes over and dazes Bullseye, but since I don't get the throw I can't stand on both the researcher and the point so I have to just stand on the researcher.
Wasp runs over to the right point.
Iron Fist runs over next to her and since he's healthy I score that point.
For a total of 3-0, I move the researcher so that Hulk can stand on both it and the point but no one on his team has a base large enough. For a total of 12-7
Bullseye does a spender into Hulk and does a fair bit of damage.
Then Hulk tries to kill Red Skull but fails.
So Red Skull dazes Immortal Hulk
Iron fist uses the Iron fist to kill Wasp and we're at a 13-10
Final turn I just run away and he scores as much as he can but it doesn't matter since he can't catch me.
15-12 is the ending result.
My opponent tried to pick a highly mobile team to counter webs not realizing that I wasn't going to play webs on this scenario set up. Then he made a big mistake with Killmonger and with Wasp. turn 1 Killmonger isn't a character that can hang in the middle of the table, and wasp should stand on the point instead of trying to hit Iron Fist.
Round 2 vs finish Toms of Finland.
We get matched against the finish and they put out their xmen player first so I jump on the chance believing there's no way an xmen player will pick me but he did so I get their x-men player, Jarkko "Thanos Was Right" Vähämaa.
The webs against x-men matchup comes down to who gets priority. I get it so I pick my secures. I get Riot and he pulls Spider infected. Already I take a sigh of relief. I think if I have priority it's a 90-10 to me, if x-men has priority it's a 33-66 matchup. This is one of the reasons why I don't think X-men should play odd numbered extracts like spiders and cubes . This is because often when they play their own extracts the opponent has priority. That means your opponent can pick up 3 things and you have to kill them. Not exactly x-mens strongest point.
I pick to play ASM, Miles, Gwen, Black Panther and Wong.
First move of the game, I take Black Panther and pick up the middle extract. Daring him to come try and do something about it.
Then Beast jumps, double walks, pick up my extract in front of Wong and "To me my xmen" backwards. Which is a waste of the jump if he just deployed straight against the objective he would've been in range.
Then Gwen walk up, take my extract and walk to my back point.
Logan goes, picks up his extract and walks to the left point.
ASM goes to his right extract and picks that up.
Storm walks up and puts a shock on ASM but deals no damage and I gain a power.
Wong walks up, but since I failed my deployment a bit he's not on the back point but he has to give a power to Gwen so that if X-23 tries to kill Black Panter I'm ready to save him next turn.
Rogue double runs over to the right point.
Miles doesn't feel like fighting Logan so he runs to my back point.
X-23 finally goes and stands within 3 of Black Panther and ASM so she got her pick of people to try and kill next turn.
This ends the round leading to a 4-5 scenario situation.
For the spiders only Beast moves.
Turn 2 starts with Gwen walking up and tries to push X-23 away but doesn't get the wild.
Rogue tried her best to kill ASM, but ASM just laughs it off.
Beast tries to hit ASM to get the trigger, not thinking about the fact that I can force him to reroll one dice. So he just walks away from panther but not reaching the point.
ASM shakes the shock, jumps onto the point and tries to kill Beast which Beast laughs off, but I get the trigger and does an impact into rogue who doesn't block anything and takes 2 damage.
Then Wong move up to the point and meditates, giving an extra power to Panter.
Then Miles walks and web swings over to the right point and kicks Rogue off the point.
My opponent senses he's losing control of the game so Logan walks up and is exactly inside of 3 of Gwen. My opponent is happy for a second before I ask him if he finishes his move there and he looks at me confused, before I spring my trap card, spider tracker, and laugh evilly as I move back to the point and outside of 3.
Leaving Logan with only Black Panther to hit which does a damage and throws Panther back onto my point.
Panter then pays for rerolls hits Logan. Dealing 2 damage and pushing him away. So Panter jumps after him but the angle was a too bad so he doesn't impact but he hits again and forces out xceptional and I try to push Logan even further away but he plays Indomitable.
X-23 walks up and does a spender into ASM but doesn't reach the point.
So I score 5 and my opponent scores 3 going to 9-8.
Spiders walk Logan, Panther, ASM and Beast.
![]() |
Panter started the turn by Jumping into Logan, dealing no damage, clawing him with rerolls, dealing 1 damage, and pushing him into the light pole. Then Panther does another attack that deals 1 damage more damage and I'm leaving Logan on 1. This lead to the only Judge call of the tournament for me. To decide if I could push my opponent further away or not. The judge ruled that I would hit the light pole again so I was sweating bullets. Luckily Logan didn't have that much power since he spent for all the cards the turn before.
So Logan goes for it. He tries to kill Black Panther and does 1 damage and throws Panther. Then he does another swing and fails to do any damage and I get to draw a sigh of relief.
So that threat is done. That means ASM can go on the right flank. He does all webbed up, and web swing before hitting X-23 and dealing a couple of points into her and doing another impact into Rogue. Then I do the spender killing X-23. My opponent thinks Beast who has taken 2 damage is in more danger than Rogue who has taken 4 so he goes with Beast, tossing ASM off the point again but not doing any damage into Miles so he ends by healing Rogue for 1.
Miles has no chill and still puts Rogue in the dirt by jumping kicking her into terrain and then spendering her to death.
Then Storm walks up and tries to do the last damage into Panther but Gwen life savers out of range and my opponent stays on his point.
Wong is the hero every game deserves and does 1 damage into Logan with his strike, and he picks up Logans spider.
Which lets Gwen walk up, pull Beast of the point and walk again to his home point.
So I score 7-2 and win 16-10
I wonder if X-men players will adapt and start playing even numbered extracts. I also don't think Logan is very good when the opponent has Black Panter, since you kind of want him alone on his side which makes it very obvious where to deploy Panter so that they square off. In this game I couldn't abuse it as much since I had to pick up the middle with panter but on other scenarios it's really abusable.
Game 3
We get paired against England Lions, which personally was what I hoped the final would be. I think it's an universal wish of every Warmachine and Hordes player to face Pat in the Final and just beating him up. He has been too much of a problem for too long of a time. Playing against Pat is so nice that you're having a lovely time while he completely shanks you on the table.
We toss me out, hoping they'll put up their guardians and either Pat or Joemanji. I wanted a game against a tts champion with everything on the line. I don't know how England Lions constructed their lists but I felt like they didn't have enough answers to webs in their rosters. Which meant that they needed to out play me and that's the kind of game that is the most fun.
There was al as o the additional problem that Lions were pretty screwed over in the pairing process since their Brotherhood player wasn't at the event. I don't think it would've mattered against me but it would've made it easier to fight against a more traditional Webs roster. But you have to play the conditions you have so they put up Guardians and their substitute player playing Inhumans. So I snap pick the Inhumans. This was his list:
Apparently he was normally playing Cosmic Ghost Rider but he wasn't allowed to have that model because that would be "unfair". So he had to play Toad instead. I do not understand why a dude that comes in last minute and has to play with whatever models he got isn't allowed to play CGR. It's not like anyone complained that lions got two black bolts in their team but two CGR's were unfair apparently. Either it's unfair that they get to have duplicates of any model or it's not unfiar because he's a substitute jumping into a top contending team last minute because someone was stuck in an airport because of the storm. Which leaves huge holes in their roster coverage and pairing process not to speak of the added stress of dealing with a substitute player. I feel a bit like my win was tainted because my opponent couldn't play what he thought he was best in the matchup. And yes I wouldn't have cared about CGR. I actually rage a lot more at Toad than CGR.
Not to say AJ wasn't a great player. He came in last minute, was thrown under the bus and still beat some incredible players while he played fantastic games.
He gets prio picks his extracts gets alien ship. I get black order descends. I realize that I can put up a bunker and ruin my opponents day with spiders. So I pick 17 points.
My opponent passes doesn't feel like he can take 2 extracts safely so he passes turn 1. This means I get two extracts for free and it's on my opponent to punish my midline dude. I have the option to grab with Miles or Black Panther. Miles can get destroyed by Black Bolt while Black Panther by a smashing Prime. Of those options I prefer Black Panthers since he can then punch back a lot harder than Miles can, but what I want least is ASM not having a token so I have to set that up anyway.
ASM goes up into the middle and drops back to the front of my point.
Quicksilver goes and picks up his extract. For ing me to set up Panther for slaughter.
Black Panther goes and picks up the last one.
Medusa steals a power from Prime, then walks in front of it and moves it in front of her before moving up to the point.
Wong walks and gives a power to Gwen.
Prime tries to shoot a Panter in cover, then realizes that's stupid so he goes up and stands on the point. Preparing to kill Panther with priority next turn.
Gwen double walks and pulls Quicksilver off the point
Black Bolt double runs up to the point.
Miles doesn't really want to stand inside of 3 of Black Bolt because then bad things happen to him. So he walks up and kicks Quicksilver. Dealing no damage.
Resulting in a 3-2 lead for webs.
So it's time for the big play. My opponent smashes the tank with Prime. Then shoots Panther with 10 dice. Resulting in 3 damage. Then again with 11 dice only dealing 2 damage. and the game is more or less over from that point.
He needed to one shot Panther to get the objective since I could fall back out of range but failing completely meant he doesn't get anyone over there to deal with it and Medusa is stranded.
Black Panther hits Medusa trying to push her back but the angle isn't really there. I hate that you can't measure the angel before you try to do something but such are the rules Anyway he runs and jumps back to his back point, into the waiting arms of Wong.
Quicksilver isn't feeling safe so close to a Miles that could get extra power for a spender so he runs towards his own back point.
Miles doesn't like Black Bolt so close to Gwen so he jumps up and kicks him away from her.
Then my opponent walks up with Black Bolt and tries to one shot Gwen which leaves her almost dead but not wholly.
ASM runs over to my left point and prepares to keep everyone safe with Witty Banter next turn.
My opponent passes so Wong heals Black Panther and Meditates.
Medusa can't really affect the board from her position so she runs to her back point.
Gwen walks, pulls Black Bolt, and Medusa, then walks to my opponents point.
Ending that turn in 5-2 for an 8-4 total score
My opponent realizes that he has to do something or he'll lose. So Black Bolt goes first and tries to kill ASM but yeah that's impossible.
Then ASM pays for all webbed up and I activate Gwen and I do two push attacks into Medusa making her stand on the table edge since I'm a lot better at rolling wilds than my opponent.
Wong healed Black Panther since I was scared of Prime walking and pulling Panther in to kill him. That felt like the only way I could possibly lose.
My opponent thought about passing but then realized Quicksilver needed to shake slow to avoid Miles getting the extra dice and killing him. His second Action was to move into a good position for Medusa.
Miles swung forward tried to kick Quicksilver but Quicksilver "You can't catch me" awayed. So Miles kicked Black Bolt away again and then went back to his point.
Sadly when I pushed Medusa back I did so much damage to her that she has power to flip Quicksilver, then flip over him, and barely walk back onto his point.
The big stupid Robot was sad that no one was close to him so he walked over towards the action but felt unsure about leaving his point.
Black Panter ran over the table to stand next to Medusa and Gwen.
Another 5-2 round takes me to 13-6
My opponent can't win if he doesn't kill Black Panter or ASM. So he tries to kill ASM with Black Bolt but fails miserably again. Not exactly hot dice there.
Then Black Panter runs away again.
My opponent braid bashes Gwen to death. A funny interaction here. I played fall back and my opponent just pushed me back into the same spot. I didn't realize her push was omni directional, but it shouldn't had worked in that order because both are before damage so he should've pushed me first then I should've walked away. It wouldn't have mattered in the big picture.
Some other bull shit happens but it really doesn't matter and the game ends 17-9.
I felt really bad. My opponent had the game plan to daze Black Panther and it should've worked, but well marvel dice are marvel dice. Such is life. If it had worked we could've had a fun dynamic game where he has 2 extracts and I get more secures. Now I got more secures and more extracts for a quick end. Once primes dice failed the game was very done and if it was a practice game I would've scooped and redone it because yeah that's just game deciding.
But yeah it wasn't a practice game and it was my job to put his dices punt into a win for my column. Then I end up sitting there for half an hour, sweat running down my back as I watch my team mates crush what we thought were the tournament favorites.
And when you beat England Lions, then the victory whisky comes out to play. We end day 1 as 3-0 with a record of 13-2.
Then I went home to sleep, and my train back to the event was cancelled so I freaked out my team by telling them I would be 15 minutes late to the start of game one. But then I caught the good buss and I showed up on time but it really wouldn't have mattered because we were matched against team Spain and they proceeded to take an hour to decide on match ups.
It wasn't one hundred percent their fault since they were forced by the Tournament Organizer to write down their lists instead of using their own gorgeous wooden match up tiles because apparently former opponents did not know the lists of the people they were facing. Which wasn't Spain's fault. There was also some added stress for them since their malekith was deemed to have been modified for a gaming advantage, so they had to borrow a malekith model from a different team but still, when we actually started the match up process we handed me over and it took them 10 minutes to decide on my possibilities. They also couldn't pick a table in the time we decided on the next match up and we probably deliberated for a good 3 minutes. It's not that hard to pick one of five almost the same tables.
Warmachine and Hordes used to have a 15 minute clock each during pairings just because the years when they didn't have a clock it delayed all games by over two hours since one team couldn't make a decision. It never mattered any year after that but just knowing you had that much time was pressure to get it done on time.
Match 4 vs Spanish Team is Pain.
We have noticed that their Guardians player lost twice against spiders early in the event. So we weren't sure about tossing me out but in the end it worked and I got to chose between spider foes or Guardians. It was better for the team if I took Guardians and I felt like it was 50/50 which was better for myself. Then I realized that their guardians player is someone I have practiced against on TTS so he would probably know a bit more about how my roster function than the Spider foes player. So I make the selfish choice and pick the spider foes player.
He gets prio picks his secures and draws Deadly Meateors, I get Paranoia, So I have the choice of 17 and 16. I pick 16 because it'sa pay to flip so Iron Fist is pretty good.
We put the paranoia out wrong. Not that it really matters.
My opponent puts the Spider Trap on my pay to flip, which I think is a mistake. That means Iron Fist can walk up trigger it, then walk back and bump to get both the pay to flip and the extract. Which is what happens after my opponent ran doc Occ up to pick up an extract on the left side.
But Iron Fist has taken 3 damage so Nebula walks up and just puts him in the ground with her pistol.
Then Wong walks up and gives a power to Hulk.
My opponent doesn't really dare go into the middle. So Lizard picks up the extract dropped by Iron fist and then hides on that side.
Blade walks up and picks up the extract close to Wong to not take damage.
Green Goblin walks up and puts a pumpkin bomb into Blade which does 2 damage.
Hulk bumps, walks, flips the point and picks up the last paranoia, then walks into position to kill Nebula at the start of the next turn.
Finally my opponent walks up with Rhino and does an attack into Blade which does no damage after I reroll my blocks. He then tries to flip the point but I have 2 healthy characters on it and he fails and rolls a skull to take one extra damage.
The turn ends 5-3 to me.
So Blade starts next to a big dumbo with no blue defense and is feeling like a target. So he puts a katana into him and then a spender, dazing him, Blade also uses the move to run away and hide behind the car.
But this means that Nebula gets to activate. So she puts a pistol into Iron Fist, but it deals no damage, and so she thinks she might as well try and get the shock on Hulk instead and does an attack into him, dealing 4 damage with the wild for the trigger. So hulk is sad.
Iron Fist has nothing better to do, since he's injured he doesn't count for contesting the objective. So he kicks Nebula and then hits her in the face dealing 3 damage and getting her low for next turn.
Green Goblin Walks over and puts a pumpkin in Blade, dealing 1 damage and an incinerate and flips the point.
Wong heals Blade for 2 and meditates for an extra power.
Lizard puts an attack into Iron Fist to try and push him away but doesn't hit the trigger so instead he just walks over and flips the point.
Hulk flips the point back from Goblin then he jumps down, shakes the shock and punches Lizard of the other point and fails an uncontested flip.
Doc Occ goes and fails an uncontested flip on the left side then walks within 2 of Rhino and tries to hit Blade behind his car and deals 1 damage.
Meaning it's a 4-4 turn and the result is 9-7
I start with Siege, which means that blade katanas Rhino for 2 damage, Wong kicks Rhino for no damage. Hulk punches Lizard and hits him into Nebula dazing her. Then Iron Fist chi strikes Lizard getting him down low.
So Blade decides that he's the priority and tries to katana strike Rhino, but rolls five blanks on the first attack. All he needed was 1 damage so he could afford the spender, but at that point it's time to run away. Since he won't do 5 damage with 5 dice against a reduce by 1 model.
Then Rhino realizes that he's in danger and does that classical Rhino round of stampeed, KO Iron fist. Hit Blade, flip over next to Hulk, rob Hulk, tossing him into Blade, forcing my brace, then tossing the tanker into Blade, dazing him. Just casual 4 point model stuff.
So Wong walks back to the extract that Blade dropped and tries to look unimportant.
Doc Occ goes to flip the back point and fails another uncontested flip before walking back
Hulk Punches Rhino tossing him into Green goblin to force the brace, then kicks Lizard in the face and takes his extract.
Goblin walks over to bully the totally unimportant Wong but only deals 3 damage. So once again Wong is a hero!
Ending the turn with a 4-4 and we're at 13-11
Blade is terrified he won't survive two attacks from Green Goblin and I need his damage output this turn. Which means he has to go first. He bumps forward, puts a normal attack into Green Goblin, then does the spender into Rhino that deals enough damage into Rhino to kill him.
Lizard punches Wong to deal the last damage into him, takes the extract, flips the point and runs away.
Then it's time for Hulk to end the game. He bumps up to Nebula and once shots her. Then he flips the point before he jumps down to Green Goblin and finishes him. Finally he one below all back to the middle point and flips that as well. I was so ready to need to do stupid stuff like toss Green Goblin away to survive but yeah just roll good dice works.
My opponent doesn't realize that he auto loses if he doesn't kill an undamaged blade with doc occ in one normal attack. So he goes and flips both points instead.
Which means the turn is 3-3 and I win 16-14
My opponent had deployed only Doc Occ on that side of the table. Which meant that when Doc Occ failed to flip the pay to flip on his side there were no other options. He also didn't have any two power models in his list to flip and pick up anything, which meant he was down on tempo against me. Finally he put Doc Occ over on the side so he could never get in the game, which meant well laid plans were never an option for my opponent.
Game 5 vs Austrian Austria A-force.
We won the first priority roll of the tournament and tossed me out. They put down their Brotherhood player and their Avengers player. Which seemed to be their two weaker players. So I took the Brotherhood player because one of my practice games was a loss against Sam which felt like a bit of a steamroll against me and I'm a lot better at dealing with Brotherhood.
Opponent passes so Iron Fist double walks, flips and picks up stuff.
Opponent double walks Juggernaut up so that he can flip and pick up on his side.
Then Wong walks up and gives power to Hulk.
Magneto walks twice but since I picked the side I did he can't get to the objectives, and instead just tosses a bush into a tank to get a power on jugger and Ulik
Then blade goes up and pick up his thing within 2 of Wong.
Ulik comes up and hits Blade twice dealing 5 damage. Then he flips the point and picks up an extract. Since he rolled an skull on the flip he took 2 damage.
Immortal Hulk jumps, bumps, punches Ulik. The first hit does 4 damage and tosses him into a trailer to kill him. Hulk then has the choice between scoring points and forcing the usage of Asteroid M next turn and that card will probably score my opponent a lot more points than one in a later turn so I flip the point before I walk up to Magneto and tosses him away down the board to no where.
Meaning it's a 5-2 start.
My opponent decides that Blade has to die so Ulik jumps and punches him, but after my rerolls he deals no damage and blade falls back out of range. Then he rages and tosses the middle tanker into Blade, which Blade braces. So then Jugger uses do you know who I am to toss a different house into Blade. So it took so many resources to kill a 1 hp blade. Then Ulik flips the point before he walks away and is scared of everything.
Hulk sees Jugger next to Ulik and is just drooling at the opportunity. He bumps over, then punches Jugger. No wild, no damage. Then he punches Jugger again, gets the wild and 2 damage but brace. So then he just uses his normal throw to toss jugger into Ulik, dealing 2 damage. I saw the glory of Ulik just dying to that amount of throw damage but such is the immortal hulk life.
Astroid M comes in and Magneto deals 10 damage to Hulk.
Iron fist walks over to the middle, flips it and walks back to his point to protect it from Jugger.
Jugger goes and flips the middle, and punches Wong. Which was a huge mistake. If he dealt 4 damage to Wong then I would have priority with Immortal Hulk next to a 4 hp Ulik and a Magneto to toss to Africa. Sadly it only deals 3 damage and Wong survives.
Wong then makes up for his audacity of surviving an 8 dice attack by walking up the to middle point, flipping it and healing himself.
Meaning it's a 5-3 turn for a 10-5
So I'm ready for Hulk to go down to Magneto, but the opponent is scared of Ulik dying to Blade so he activates Ulik does a spender into Hulk dealing 3 damage. Leaving Hulk on 2 and staggered. Then he punches Blade and deals no damage again.
Blade senses weakness and bumps over towards Jugger, then smacks him with a normal attack and does the spender into him. Leaving Jugger on 2 HP.
Jugger walks up and tries to kill Iron Fist, but only deals 2 damage, meaning he can't push into Iron fist for the kill.
Wong walks backwards and just heals Iron Fist.
Magneto can't afford to spend time on a staggered Hulk so he walks up and just raw kills Blade from full with no rerolls no nothing.
But then Iron Fist does two chi strikes into Jugger and dazes him. Which means Hulk goes and picks up the extract and I win 16-8.
Ulik just doesn't feel good enough for five points. I'm pretty sure Sabertooth would've done more for a point less.
Then it was time to sit there and sweat again. Hugo lost his game but then the other three stomped their way through and we won the whole event at a score of 21/25 individual games.
So I'm a world champ, and I got a printed paper to prove it!
Then the winning team selfie "Where the fuck is Björn?"
Thank you to all my opponents and I hope you see what I think through the reports. I think about 95% of it is accurate but this is the battle reports to the best of my recollection. I'm sorry if I've made some mistake or missed something important.
I want to give a heartfelt thank to the people that arranged the WTC, I had a blast.
